The Venomous Abyss: WoW Midnight Season 2 Raid Guide
The Venomous Abyss opens August 18 as WoW Midnight Season 2's eight-boss raid. See the schedule, boss mechanics, tier sets, rewards, and prep plan.

Ula'tek awakens on August 18, 2026. Here is the verified launch schedule, lore, eight-boss lineup, early mechanics, loot, and what raid teams should do before entering the Vaults of Atal'Utek.
PRE-LAUNCH ACCURACY NOTE
The raid has not opened on live servers as of August 12, 2026. Boss mechanics summarized below come from Blizzard's Adventure Journal information and pre-launch PTR guides. Tuning, timings, and preferred strategies may change through launch-day hotfixes.
World of Warcraft: Midnight Season 2 is about to move from preparation into full raid progression. The Curse of Ula'tek content update went live during the week of August 11, but The Venomous Abyss itself opens with the regional weekly reset during the week of August 18. For North American players, that means the first raid night can begin on Tuesday, August 18.
Blizzard has not announced an official end date for Midnight Season 2. A five-to-six-month estimate may be useful for rough planning, but it remains an estimate rather than a confirmed schedule. What is confirmed is a venom-soaked eight-boss raid, a direct confrontation with Ula'tek, new class sets, a Mythic-only mount, achievement rewards, housing trophies, and a progression structure designed to test far more than raw single-target damage.

Why Ula'tek Matters to the Amani Story
The Venomous Abyss is not presented as a disconnected raid chamber. It is the climactic threat at the center of the Curse of Ula'tek update. Guided by the dark whispers of Hex Lord Malacrass, Zul'jan has freed Ula'tek's forgotten broods and is trying to complete the ritual that will unleash her power. Zul'jarra calls on Azeroth's champions to descend into the vaults and stop her brother before the imprisoned weapon escapes.
Blizzard describes Ula'tek as the great shame of the Amani empire. The enormous complex of Atal'Utek was built to imprison a weapon that became nearly as dangerous to the Amani as the enemy it was created to destroy. That framing gives the raid unusual narrative weight: players are not merely killing another giant serpent. They are entering a prison built around an ancient Amani failure and confronting the consequences of Zul'jan's alliance with Malacrass.
A Branching Raid Built for Progression
The organized raid appears to use a partially branching structure. Nek'zali the Soulcoiler serves as the opening encounter. After that, groups can clear two separate two-boss wings: the Vile Crypt route with the Entombed Sentinels and Vashnik the Malignant, and the Crypt of the Soulcoilers route with The Lost Explorers and Sszorak. Once both branches are complete, the raid returns to the central progression path for The Twin Fangs, The Coiled Altar, and Ula'tek.
That layout should give raid leaders some flexibility during early progression. If one branch proves significantly harder after live tuning, groups may be able to change routes and preserve momentum. Raid Finder packages the bosses into four themed wings, so its wing sequence does not exactly reproduce the path an organized Normal, Heroic, or Mythic team will follow.
The Eight Bosses of The Venomous Abyss
1. Nek'zali the Soulcoiler
Nek'zali is the raid's opening gatekeeper and the first major test of add control. The encounter centers on the Soulcoil Well in the middle of the room. Restless Amani that reach the well can empower the boss, and player deaths near the well can also make the encounter more dangerous. The fight includes two major phases separated by an intermission, so the first pull is expected to reward disciplined positioning, immediate add priority, and clean transition execution rather than simple opener damage.
2. Entombed Sentinels
The Blood of Ula'tek and the Breath of Ula'tek form a two-target encounter that requires the raid to split. When the Sentinels are close together, they gain a massive damage-reduction effect, forcing tanks to separate them and players to handle different mechanic packages on each side. At full energy, the constructs enter Vitriolic Stasis, restoring the weaker Sentinel and applying additional toxin pressure. Health balancing, cross-group communication, and disciplined tank swaps should determine whether this encounter feels controlled or chaotic.
3. Vashnik the Malignant
Vashnik fights inside a chamber built around three fountains: Blood, Shadow, and Flame. When he casts Imbibe, he draws power from two nearby fountains, creates living venom adds, and gains infusion stacks that strengthen mechanics associated with those venom types. The raid therefore has to manage both immediate add interception and the longer-term consequences of repeated fountain combinations. Expect a one-phase fight with rising environmental damage, healing pressure, and an emphasis on controlling what reaches the center of the room.
4. The Lost Explorers
The Lost Explorers are a three-target council encounter involving possessed tortollans and a deliberately unusual resource mechanic. Players must interrupt Mor'zahi's Final Ascension by feeding a Disgusting Fish to one of the possessed explorers before the cast completes. Each explorer can only be fed once, creating a limited number of resets before the raid runs out of options. This makes kill order, cleave control, and timing especially important. The encounter should punish groups that spread damage carelessly without a clear plan for which target dies first.
5. Sszorak
Sszorak is a movement-heavy encounter driven by wind, pushback, knockback, and venomous ground pressure. Raging Crosswinds and Howling Maelstrom threaten to move players out of position, while Venomous Surge rewards careful spacing around targeted players. Sszorak also creates a planned burst opportunity during Dig In, when the boss takes increased damage. Raid teams will need enough mobility and knockback recovery to survive the movement pattern while still aligning offensive cooldowns with the vulnerable window.
6. The Twin Fangs
Vexhul and Ithraz turn personal debuff awareness into the central raid mechanic. Their abilities build Eternal Venom on players, and reaching nine stacks is immediately fatal. Ravenous Feast functions as a coordinated group soak that removes a limited number of stacks, meaning players cannot simply soak on habit; they need to enter when their own venom count requires it. Add control, two-target cleave, controlled boss health, and stack-based soak assignments should make this one of the raid's clearest communication checks.
7. The Coiled Altar
The penultimate encounter brings Zul'jan and Hex Lord Malacrass into the same fight. The encounter begins with Zul'jan, transitions to Malacrass after Zul'jan falls, and culminates when Malacrass binds his soul to Zul'jan and forces the raid to deal with both together. Pre-launch information points to a three-phase encounter with venom pools, manifestations, heavy raid damage, healing absorbs, and coordinated destruction of hazards. This is likely to be the raid's final major execution check before Ula'tek.
8. Ula'tek
Ula'tek is a three-phase final boss with an intermission before the last phase. The encounter combines persistent area denial, constant add spawns, eggs that hatch when exposed to venom, and Spectral Coils that damage the raid while breaking apart the available battlefield. In the final phase, Circling Prey removes remaining safe space and turns the encounter into an escalating race against collapse. The early design suggests that success will depend on controlled egg activation, rapid add priority, planned group soaks, and preserving enough room to finish the fight.

Gear Progression, Tier Tokens, and the Great Vault
Pre-launch raid data shows item levels increasing as groups move deeper into the instance. The final two Mythic encounters are expected to reach item level 344, equivalent to the additional Myth 9 upgrade level introduced for the tier. Because this information comes from pre-launch data, players should verify final item levels after the August 18 reset.
| Difficulty | Pre-Launch Raid Drop Range |
|---|---|
| Raid Finder | 279-289 |
| Normal | 292-302 |
| Heroic | 305-315 |
| Mythic | 318-344 |
Tier Token Sources
| Boss | Tier Slot |
|---|---|
| Entombed Sentinels | Hands |
| The Lost Explorers | Shoulders |
| Vashnik the Malignant | Chest |
| Sszorak | Legs |
| The Twin Fangs | Helm |
| Ula'tek | Slumbering Coil Curio - tier piece of the player's choice |
Raid Great Vault slots are expected to unlock after defeating two, four, and six current-season raid bosses, excluding Story Mode. This gives progression groups meaningful Vault credit even before they achieve a full clear.

What The Venomous Abyss Appears to Test
| Raid Skill | Where It Matters |
|---|---|
| Priority add damage | Nek'zali, Vashnik, The Twin Fangs, and Ula'tek |
| Two-target cleave and council control | Entombed Sentinels, The Lost Explorers, and The Twin Fangs |
| Split-group execution | Entombed Sentinels and several late-raid assignments |

| Movement and knockback recovery | Sszorak and Ula'tek |
| Arena preservation | Vashnik, The Coiled Altar, and Ula'tek |
Taken together, the encounter lineup does not look like a pure single-target damage raid. Guilds will need players who can swap targets immediately, preserve positioning under movement pressure, track personal debuffs, and follow assigned soak or split-group plans without hesitation.
How Guilds Should Prepare Before August 18
- Reach level 90 and stabilize the roster. Lock in tanks, healers, substitutes, and attendance expectations before the first raid night.
- Use the pre-season week efficiently. Mythic 0 dungeons are available during the week of August 11 and drop item level 292 gear on a weekly reset. Great Vault Season 2 credit also begins during this week.
- Pre-assign split groups. Entombed Sentinels is already known to require two separated teams. Assigning balanced groups before raid night will save time.
- Build an add-priority plan. Several bosses punish delayed target swaps. Raid markers, priority macros, and clear calls will matter more than chasing overall damage.
- Review movement tools and defensives. Knockback recovery, personal damage reduction, healthstones, and movement cooldowns should be planned before Sszorak and Ula'tek.
- Treat launch strategies as provisional. Use PTR information to understand mechanic intent, but expect live tuning and hotfixes to change timings, thresholds, and the best route through the raid.
What We Still Do Not Know
The boss roster, opening schedule, story premise, and reward structure are established. The major unknown is live difficulty. Until players enter the raid on August 18, there will be no reliable progression data showing which branch should be cleared first, which encounter becomes the first Heroic wall, or how aggressively Blizzard will retune the final two bosses.
The season's end date is also still unknown. Blizzard's current Season 2 announcements provide the opening schedule but do not set a closing date. Players should therefore treat any projected five-to-six-month season length as planning speculation and watch for an official roadmap or later content announcement.
Final Outlook
The Venomous Abyss has the ingredients of a memorable second raid tier: strong Amani lore, a visually distinct venom-and-serpent theme, a branching middle section, multiple council and two-target fights, and a final boss that appears designed to destroy the battlefield around the raid. It also gives Midnight Season 2 a clear narrative identity. The raid is not simply another vault to loot; it is the prison of an ancient weapon that the Amani themselves feared.
For most guilds, the best opening goal will be a disciplined Normal clear followed by measured Heroic progression. The groups that succeed fastest will not necessarily be those with the highest theoretical damage. They will be the teams that control adds, communicate venom stacks, preserve safe space, and execute assignments consistently while Blizzard's live tuning settles.
